SCERT Transition Courses: English and Urdu schools struggle with incomplete content and missing modules

As the new academic year has started for schools in Maharashtra, the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has launched a specially prepared bridging course to help children deal with learning loss of the previous school year. But apart from the schools offering a Marathi curriculum, all the others are struggling to implement the courses due to incomplete content or missing modules.

Bridge courses have been launched for grades 2 to 10 in subjects such as languages, mathematics, science and social studies. This includes pre-tests to assess where students stand in relation to the expected learning outcomes of the previous class, a remedial coaching module and another series of tests.

In accordance with the timetable for these courses, declared by the SCERT, all schools were to organize pre-tests during the first week of reopening. Teaching of the new curriculum will only begin after the end of the second round of testing. “In Maharashtra, school education is possible in eight different modes of education. But when it comes to providing extra help, Marathi is always preferred,” said a senior teacher at an Urdu language school in the city.

Of the total five subjects covered by the bridging courses, only three have been uploaded by SCERT for Urdu Middle Schools – Urdu, Mathematics and Science. There is no content for the social sciences as well as for the second language. In mathematics, there is no module available for classes 6, 7 and 8.

For English-language schools, out of five subjects, bridging course content was only made available for four – English, science, maths and social studies. There is no pre-test available in social science classes. “The pre-test is the first stage of the relay course, because the remedial coaching can only start afterwards. In mathematics, there is no course content available for grades 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7,” said a teacher from an English-speaking school.

For the Marathi Medium Curriculum only, two languages ​​are covered – Marathi, a first language document, and English, a second language document. For English and Urdu lessons, only native language modules have been provided. For schools offering other teaching materials, there are no bridging course modules.

When contacted, Deputy Director of SCERT, Vikas Garad said, “The Bridge Course Module will be available in Marathi, Urdu and English as maximum number of schools are covered by these three mediums. instructions. We are working on a war footing to complete the remaining modules of the relay course.
