Outrage as Gbajabiamila takes Harvard course amid ASUU strike

Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila has been trolled on Twitter for circulating photos of himself receiving lectures at Harvard University in the US amid the continuing Academic strike Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Daily Trust reports that academic activities at public universities have been suspended since February 14, 2022, leaving hundreds of thousands of students at home.

The union said successive Nigerian administrations failed to implement agreements reached in 2009.

ASUU has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to adopt the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) for the payment of university staff salaries instead of the Integrated Staff Payroll and Employee Payment Information System. Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), among others.

On Tuesday, the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) mobilized unions across the country to protest in solidarity with ASUU, demanding that Buhari meet ASUU’s demands so that students can return to school.

Gbajabiamila in a tweet on Tuesday said he had returned to Harvard Kennedy School.

“Back to class. In a @havard @Kennedy_school leadership class. Forget the number of gray hairs, you’re never too old to learn.

His message, however, angered Twitter users.

Tweeting via @__raid, a certain Ridwan Ajibade said: “We are on strike Hon., young people want to learn. Please do something.”

@aayanate wrote: “While our students are at home helpless and our teachers are protesting below deck. Posterity will judge.

@johneke997 said: “Back to class!! On the same day, NLC organizes a demonstration, ASUU striking like thunder! You don’t see us finishing 💔”

@SheikhAnalo wrote: “It’s not by attending classes baba what did you learn and how does it affect the average Nigerian as I’m very certain their taxes and resources paid for the course .”

@FS_Yusuf said: “Oga, ASUU dey strike o. 15 million children are out of school. Thousands of youngsters in Surulere are at home and not in school. We have done”

@olorunwababs said, “If universities in the US were to go on strike, how will you experience a system that works? Walk around and see how basic things work in a normal university? Hope you will come back and use your influence to keep our educational institutions running. #EndAsuuStrikeNow »
