Jiangsu University of Science and Technology (JUST), located in Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province, China, offers a diving course for its students to strengthen psychic education.
By introducing the course, the university became the first educational institution in the province to offer diving courses. Under this course, students can take 16 courses for one semester, reports Xinhua, the official state news agency.
Currently, students taking the course are trained in a two-meter-deep outdoor pool.
“Diving is a bit mysterious in China and students have to learn a lot of theory”, Li Ming, a university diving teacher, said.
Ming stressed that students should first learn to swim before entering the water as part of the course.
The report further adds that each student in the class will receive a full set of diving equipment worth more than 3,000 yuan (about $445).
“Under the principle of safety precautions, we plan to teach diving in a lake on campus once students have mastered some basic diving skills. Course assessment will include underwater operations such as diving. ‘assembly of diving equipment’, Li added.
The university’s decision to include a diving course has also been well received by students. For Zhang Jiayi, one of the students who took the course, the class is amazing.
“I had never experienced diving before and never expected to have the chance to learn the sport so systematically at university.” she pointed out.
Jiayi told Xinhua that in addition to the diving course, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology also offers other courses, including darts and kayaking.
Jiangsu University of Science and Technology has been accepting undergraduate students since 1978. It was authorized to offer master’s degrees in 1993 and doctoral degrees in 2008.
The university offers several scholarships each year. Some 80 to 100 students benefit from bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral scholarships offered by the university.
More than 25,000 students pursue bachelor’s studies at JUST and 2,800 at the doctoral level. Students enrolled in a language course are also eligible for university scholarships.
The university employs a considerable number of teachers and support staff. The university has some 1,320 faculty members, including 190 professors and 630 associate professors.
So far, more than 140,000 students have graduated from JUST. Following this number, the university obtained the title of the “Cradle of Chinese shipbuilding engineers”.
